Laptop & Desktop Care Guide
Simple Do and Don't tips from our 22 years in the computer business, to keep your laptop and desktop running longer and save repair cost.
How to Take Care of Your Laptop
A laptop is a daily companion. A little care keeps it fast, cool and long-lasting.
Heat, battery and dirt are the three enemies
Most laptop problems we see in the shop come from blocked vents, a bad charger or liquid spills. Follow the simple habits below and your laptop will last years longer.
Keep it cool
Charge smartly
Keep it clean
โ DO
Do this
- Use the laptop on a hard, flat surface so the air vents stay open.
- Use the original or a good quality charger of the same rating.
- Clean the screen with a soft microfiber cloth, slightly damp, with the laptop off.
- Shut down or restart regularly and keep Windows and antivirus updated.
- Carry it in a padded bag and keep the lid closed while moving.
- Take a backup of important photos and files every month.
- Get the fan and vents cleaned every 6 to 12 months.
โ DON'T
Avoid this
- Do not use it on a bed, sofa or pillow. It blocks the vents and the laptop overheats.
- Do not eat or drink over the keyboard. One spill can damage the motherboard.
- Do not pull the charger by the wire or use a cheap duplicate charger.
- Do not lift or carry the laptop by the screen.
- Do not leave it in a hot car or in direct sun.
- Do not close the lid with a pen or earphones on the keyboard.
- Do not install pirated software or open unknown links and files.
- Do not ignore a very hot body, loud fan or a swollen battery. Get it checked.
How to Take Care of Your Desktop
Desktops last long when they get clean air, steady power and a little regular care.
Dust and bad power cause most desktop faults
Dust inside the cabinet and power fluctuation are behind most desktop breakdowns. Place it well, protect it from power spikes and clean it on time.
Clean air
Steady power
Regular cleaning
โ DO
Do this
- Keep the cabinet in an open, ventilated place a few inches away from the wall.
- Use a UPS or stabilizer to protect against power cuts and voltage spikes.
- Clean the dust inside the cabinet every 3 to 6 months.
- Always shut down from Windows before switching off the power.
- Keep cables tidy and check that all plugs are tight.
- Use a good quality power supply (SMPS) and branded RAM and storage.
- Change the thermal paste on the processor every 2 to 3 years.
โ DON'T
Avoid this
- Do not keep the cabinet on a carpet or inside a closed cupboard.
- Do not switch off from the plug again and again. It can corrupt Windows and damage the hard disk.
- Do not plug it into a loose or overloaded socket.
- Do not clean inside with water or a wet cloth.
- Do not open the cabinet or touch parts while the power is on.
- Do not keep it near water, a window with rain, or direct sunlight.
- Do not ignore strange noises, beeps or sudden restarts.
Buying a Second Hand Laptop? Read This
A good used laptop saves a lot of money. These tips help you choose well.
Checklist
What to check before you buy
Check the screen for dead pixels and lines, test every key, ports and Wi-Fi, see how long the battery lasts, and watch for heating and fan noise. Ask for the original charger and check the condition honestly.
Choosing
RAM, NVMe and generation
For office work, online classes and browsing, 8GB RAM with a 256GB NVMe SSD is a good start. For heavy multitasking or editing, choose 16GB RAM. A newer processor generation, like 8th Gen or later, gives better speed and battery life.
Advice
Repair or replace?
Many slow laptops only need an SSD or more RAM, which costs far less than a new one. If the repair costs close to a similar working machine, replacing makes more sense. We will tell you honestly which is better.
